Verily, you (Ya Rasoolallah!) are of a tremendous character

Verily, you (O Muhammad!) are of a tremendous character

Tafsīr of Sūrah Qalam, Verse 4

From "In the Gardens of Tafsīr, Shaykh Ibrahīm Niasse

(4) {And indeed, you are of a tremendous character.} The Venerable One, Blessed and Exalted, informs us that Muḥammad, may Allāh bless him and give him peace, is of a great moral character. ʼĀ'ishah said, "His character was the Qur'ān." Whoever wishes to know the character of Muḥammad, then let him read the Qur'ān: {The believers have succeeded. Those who are humble in their prayers. And those who reject false speech. And those who give regular charity…" to the end of the Sūrah. These are the characteristics of Muḥammad, may Allāh bless him and give him peace. His characteristics are the Qur'ān. He established everything that the Qur'ān commanded and he, may Allāh bless him and give him peace, did not come near what the Qur'ān forbade. In fact, the Qur'ān is the source of Muḥammad. The Qur'ān is symbolic and Muḥammad is the perceptible form.

So everything that is in the Qur'ān is in Muḥammad, may Allāh bless him and give him peace, to that point that if you were to contemplate, you would find that the Qur'an is personified in Muḥammad ibn ʼAbd Allāh ibn ʼAbd al-Muṭṭalib. Some things symbolically, others literally. Then, everything in the Qur'ān is in Muhammad ibn ʼAbd Allāh, ibn ʼAbd al-Muṭṭalib. Joined in him are all of the qualities of the Prophets. And the Prophets have the noblest qualities. However, some qualities were more prominent in some of them. In Muḥammad, may Allāh bless him and give him peace, is the purity of Adam. In Muḥammad, may Allāh bless him and give him peace, is the gratitude of Noah. In Muḥammad, may Allāh bless him and give him peace, is the intimate friendship of Abraham. In Muḥammad, may Allāh bless him and give him peace, is the sincerity of Moses. In Muḥammad, may Allāh bless him and give him peace, is the patience of Job and the asceticism of Jesus and of John. And in Muḥammad, may Allāh bless him and give him peace, is the patience and the gratitude of Joseph. And he joined together between the two stations. He was afflicted first and he was patient. Then he was granted blessing afterwards and he was thankful.

For this reason he was addressed in the Qur'ān {Those are whom Allāh guided. So by their guidance follow them}. Follow them in what? It cannot be in their law codes, because his law code abrogated their law codes. So it is not possible for him to follow them in their law codes. However, each one of them has noble qualities. And whatever was divided amongst them is joined in him, may Allāh bless him and give him peace. And he is the Sole Unification [Fard Jamʼ]. He is the most praised [Muḥammad] of all of the Prophets. The qualities of all of the Prophets, their perfections and their noblest characters are in him, may Allāh bless him and give him peace.

For that reason, the Truth described him as his character being tremendous. For man has two (types) of strength: intellectual strength and physical strength. And the Chosen One, may Allāh bless him and give him peace, did not use his intellectual strength except for religious learning [ʼilm] and knowledge of Allāh [maʼrifa]. And he did not use his physical strength except for compulsory [al-farḍ], necessary [al-wājib] and voluntary acts [al-mustaḥabb]. As for forbidden and disliked things, no. He did not come near forbidden or disliked things at all. So all of his physical strength was used for compulsory, necessary and voluntary acts. And all of his intellectual strength was for religious learning and knowledge of Allāh, Blessed and Exalted. So He said, Exalted is He, {Verily you are of a tremendous character}.

He, may Allāh bless him and give him peace, explained these noble qualities when he said, "That you pardon those who wrong you, that you establish ties with the one who cuts you off, and that you give to the one who withholds from you."

When the Venerable One, Blessed and Exalted, described the Chosen One, may Allāh bless him and give him peace, as having beautiful conduct; we knew that beautiful conduct was a tremendous thing. By his beautiful conduct were indicated what the Chosen One, may Allāh bless him and give him peace, had of noble characteristics, miracles and tremendous actions. The first thing that will be measured from the actions of the slave is his excellent conduct. So whoever beautifies his conduct will attain high levels with his Lord, Blessed and Exalted.

Once, one of the companions approached and the Messener of Allāh, may Allāh bless him and give him peace, said, "A man among the People of Paradise is entering upon you." Then, ʼAbd Allāh ibn Salām entered. When he had entered, the companions rushed to him, saying to him, "Indicate to this action of yours so that we may follow you in it. For the Messenger of Allāh, may Allāh bless him and give him peace, sad about you such and such." He said, "I don't do a lot of prayer, nor a lot of fasting. However, when I enter the day, I intend that I should not harbor ill will or malice towards any slave of Allāh until I sleep and that I should not harm, with my tongue, any slave of Allāh until I enter the night. And when I enter the night, I intend that I should not harbor ill will or malice towards any slave of Allāh until I sleep and that I should not harm, with my tongue, any slave of Allāh." They said to him, "That's it."

{The Day that neither wealth nor progeny will benefit. Only the one who comes to Allāh with a sincere heart}

That is his tremendous character. The character of the Chosen One, may Allāh bless him and give him peace, is not connected with the world, nor the Hereafter, but instead to the Lord, Great is His Exaltedness. So the Truth said to him: {Verily you are of a tremendous character}..
